Excursion Las Alpujarras and Trevélez
|
|
|
Las Alpujarras
Las Alpujarras or La Alpujarra, is a mountainous area in the southern Spanish region of Andalusia.
The area is located on the southern flank of the Sierra Nevada, roughly between the cities of Granada and Almeria.
The western part is located in Granada province and the eastern in the province of Almeria. The landscape is characterized by fertile valleys and stunning mountains in a quiet and authentic atmosphere. Here you can learn about the architecture so typical of the Alpujarras.
On the slopes are whitewashed terraced houses that are connected together by flat roofs. From this area is the mineral water Lanjarón and the famous Jamon de Trevélez.
The area consists mainly of valleys ranging from the peaks of the Sierra Nevada in the north to the Sierras Almijara, and Contraviesa Gádor, which separate the area from the Mediterranean Sea in the south.
The area was known as the last refuge of the Moors, after the fall of the Kingdom of Granada they remained here for 150 years. The influence of the Moors is not completely gone yet, reflected in particular in agriculture, architecture, local cuisine, local method of carpet weaving and the various Arab place names.
Trevélez
Trevélez is a small mountain village from the time of the Moors, now there are still about 800 residents who keep the authenticity of the area in daily life and traditions.
The village lies in the heart of La Alpujarra, at the foot of the Mulhacen, amidst the National park of the Sierra Nevada, protected by the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
At a height of 1.476m Trevélez is the highest village of the Iberian Peninsula. The environment is beautiful, with some very impressive natural resources, surrounded by greenery, a precious natural environment and two mountain rivers that surround the village.
The center consists of three different neighborhoods: high, medium and low, with an altitude of 200 meters, down to the river Trevélez, rich in trout, and is part of a spectacular mountain scenery which is huge and fascinating.
Trevélez is the ideal place for rest and escape from daily routine and also for outdoor activities. Here you will find clean air, no noise or pollution.
It is famous for its delicious Serrano ham, due to its special microclimate, with dry air and stable climate all year round, this is the ideal environment for the ham to dry and store.
